Vital Communities

I find the concept of a "vital community" both intriguing and, in many ways, challenging. What makes a vital community? How do you build one? Joy Gordon is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and Columbia Teachers College. She has spent most of her career working with non-profit organizations to connect them to community resources. She is currently a Community Specialist for the Jewish Family and Children's Service of Minneapolis where she coordinates the congregational nurse program and does counseling for reverse mortgages. She also writes a quarterly educational newsletter for seniors and runs monthly health and wellness lectures that are widely viewed on Cable TV in St. Louis Park and Hopkins.

Living the Vital Life

Carol Daly received her bachelor's degree from Cornell University and her master's degree from the University of Minnesota. She was state director for Minnesota Elderhostel at the University of Minnesota's College of Continuing Education for 23 years. Carol left full-time, paid work in 2001 and is intrigued with both the opportunities and the challenges of living a life that is as full and meaningful now as it has been in the past. Carol helped found the U of M's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and recently served on its Board of Directors and on the VAN Leadership Group.

Janet completed the ALVA program in 2006. As a result of the class, Janet and her husband, Mark, founded a nonprofit organization MYR, Inc. with the mission of helping individuals plan for an active, healthy, productive retirement. MYR, Inc published Mapping Your Retirement and Skeie is one of the editors. She retired in 2003 and now focuses her time on the MYR organization and encouraging others to plan for a healthy and productive life.
