Making a Difference in Our Communities

by Pam Hayle May 04, 2018

Every May, the Administration on Aging, leads our nation’s observance of Older Americans Month.  The 2018 theme, Engage at Every Age, emphasizes that you are never too old (or young) to take part in activities that can enrich your physical, mental and emotional well-being. It also celebrates the many ways in which older adults make a difference in our communities.

Across the country older Americans, a rapidly growing part of the population, are taking part in activities that promote wellness and social connection. It’s our hope that VAN can assist you with making those connections with your community every day—not just during Older Americans Month.

It is becoming more apparent that remaining socially engaged can improve the quality of life for older adults, and for everyone. Early lessons learned from VAN’s Wellness 50+ initiatives have supported that theory in real-life practice. Older adults are making positive changes in their communities and improving physical, mental and social health.

Older adults with social ties to their communities are really practicing “civic engagement.” Civic engagement means working to make a difference in the lives of community members. It is sometimes is called giving back, community service or just plain volunteering. No matter what you call it, older Americans are doing it, and in higher numbers that ever before.

Are you looking for ways to grow and encourage healthy communities?  VAN can help. Come to a forum or a VAN event, or volunteer. If not with VAN, find your opportunity and Engage at Every Age.
