Recreation

"Try it. You may like it.”

—Colette Cumella

As an active older adult, you now have far more opportunities for recreation, travel, and sports than earlier generations, and thanks to the Internet, far easier access to what is available. Opportunities exist for every pocketbook and interest, for every age group, for intergenerational groups, and for people with special needs or disabilities.

Look for information in local newspapers, in newsletters from educational institutions and community organizations, and at your local library.

You can find information about programs that serve people with special needs or disabilities through the Access-Able Travel Source.

This section includes the following pages:

  • Travel - Traveling can be fun and very rewarding for older adults. You will want to take advantage of the discounts that many travel companies offer to individuals fifty or older.
  • Clubs and Associations - Clubs and associations are great ways for older adults to find other people with similar interests, and most likely, groups already exist that focus on your interests, such as groups pursuing outdoor activities.
  • Performing and Visual Arts - Even if you are not engaged in the creative arts yourself, you may still find it rewarding to participate in the performing and visual arts as a member of the audience.
  • Outdoor Activities - Humans seem to have an inherent urge for contact with nature. Older adults have as wide a choice of activities as their imaginations can dream up.
  • Sports - Now, more than ever, older adults can find year-round opportunities to stay actively engaged in sports.
